I was thinking about motivation and how sometimes it slips away from me. And I realized that I’m certainly not alone. Sooner or later we all hit periods where we just can’t find motivation.
Sometimes motivation is hard to come by
I struggle with this particularly from time to time with my music. Sometimes I get on a roll were it seems like everything I do turns into music. The songs just spill out and before I know it I’ve got three or four new songs that seem decent to me.
These productive rushes are a great gift, but they come and go. And in between there are times of varying degrees of motivation. And in those times of low motivation, it can be really difficult to figure out how to keep going musically.
If you’re a musician–or you have a long-nagging-yet-unrealized desire to be a musician–then I’m certain you’ve experienced similar swings. I don’t know any musician who hasn’t dealt with these highs and lows.
A year’s worth of inspiration
As I was thinking about this, it occurred to me that with every musician having gone through this, maybe I could turn to musicians to help find motivation during the low times. So I went out searching for inspirational quotes about music. And I found a bunch.
I’ve assembled a group of 52 quotes that touched me somehow, and I believe they can touch you too. So, I’ve taken these 52 quotes, written a short essay about what each of them says to me, and included a short reflection that I think would help me focus my mind on music.
